It details the instructions given for the search from Secretary of War, Jefferson Davis, the men included in the quest, their equipment and a nearly day by day description of the land, the people, and the happenings of the party. A very unique read. These highlights are taken from the complete and lengthy report kept on file by the U.S. Geological Society.

$'s

$'s

By the American Revolution, Spanish dollars gained significance because they backed paper money authorized by the individual colonies and the Continental Congress.Common in the Thirteen Colonies, Spanish dollars were even legal tender in one colony, Virginia.
On April 2, 1792, U. S. Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton reported to Congress the precise amount of silver found in Spanish milled dollar coins in common use in the States. As a result, the United States Dollar was defined[4] as a unit of weight equaling 371 4/16th grains (24.057 grams) of pure silver, or 416 grains of standard silver (standard silver being defined as 1,485 parts fine silver to 179 parts alloy[5]). It was specified that the "money of account" of the United States should be expressed in those same "dollars" or parts thereof. Additionally, all lesser-denomination coins were defined as percentages of the dollar coin, such that a half-dollar was to contain half as much silver as a dollar, quarter-dollars would contain one-fourth as much, and so on.
In an act passed in January 1837, the dollar's alloy (amount of non-silver metal present) was set at 11%. Subsequent coins would contain the same amount of pure silver as previously, but were reduced in overall weight (to 412.25 grains). On February 21, 1853, the quantity of silver in the lesser coins was reduced, with the effect that their denominations no longer represented their silver content relative to dollar coins.
Various acts have subsequently been passed affecting the amount and type of metal in U. S. coins, so that today there is no legal definition of the term "dollar" to be found in U. S. statute.[6][7][8] Currently the closest thing to a definition is found in United States Code Title 31, Section 5116, paragraph b, subsection 2: "The Secretary [of the Treasury] shall sell silver under conditions the Secretary considers appropriate for at least $1.292929292 a fine troy ounce."
Silver was mostly removed from U. S. coinage by 1965 and the dollar became a free-floating fiat currency without a commodity backing defined in terms of real gold or silver. The US Mint continues to make silver $1-denomination coins, but these are not intended for general circulation.

Mintage: 305,770

North Georgia Collection pedigree. Variety 1. Nearly every branch mint gold coin currently in an MS61 holder holder was in a lower graded holder as recently as few years ago. Given the number of examples that have been graded MS61 (and better) by the two services, you’d think this was a reasonably common coin in Uncirculated. This is far from the truth as most of the pieces in Mint State holders are marginal quality and the number of true Uncirculated pieces is probably in the area of nine to twelve.

Monday 16 June 2008

I actually used flash for once...I like the effect sometimes. Yes, taken in my bathroom. I love the pink tiles...and I like the reflection of the bathroom lights in my sunglasses!

I got these sunglasses and the gold bee necklace today. First I went to the dentist for a cleaning & a filling (cost me $176! Geeze. I need a cheaper dentist...) then I met up with Risa (my friend from high school) at SPoT coffee and we shopped on Elmwood. I got a dress from Plum Pudding, then the sunglasses, necklace, and a purse from Clutch. After that I took my 5 hour pre-licensing course...again. Ugh.

Now I'm waiting for Angela to pick me up and I'm going to see her for a bit. Tomorrow? Buff State orientation & then maybe the mall with Angela & Chelsea? Cool. I really can't afford to spend any more money though...although, ETS (Elmwood Taco & Sub) called me for an interview today! Thank goodness. I need a JOB.

bye<3

21 of 365 - Organize

21/365, January 21, 2010

I have two thin drawers in the vanity in the bathroom. Up until last night I had just thrown most of my cheap jewelry into the drawers and rummaged for it when I needed it.

Last summer I found these frames for $1 each at a garage sale. They were painted gold and had ugly pictures in them. I took out the glass and backing and lightly painted the frames. (Not sure if I like my paint job, but I can always change it.) There was a business leaving their suite in my building and they were giving away cork boards and I got these for free. I then just added some red pins from my sewing basket. The cost for the whole project was just $2! It looks like I need to go earring shopping!

2008 Martin Van Buren Presidential $1 Coin - 8th President, 1837-1841

2008 Martin Van Buren Presidential $1 Coin - 8th President, 1837-1841

In 2005, President Bush signed the Presidential $1 Coin Act authorizing the United States Mint to strike $1 coins honoring America's Presidents in the order in which they served. This coin, the eighth in the Presidential $1 Coin Program, honors President Martin Van Buren. Martin Van Buren, the first President not of British decent, was also the first President born an American citizen. He served in the United States Senate and was Governor of New York before becoming Andrew Jackson's Secretary of State. He served as Vice President during Jackson's second term and handily won the 1837 Presidential election. As President, Van Buren initiated an independent federal treasury system to take the place of the state banks' handling of federal monies and peacefully settled disputes with Great Britain that were threatening to take the country to war. The Martin Van Buren Presidential $1 Coin features a likeness of Van Buren on the obverse and a reverse design with a striking rendition of the Statue of Liberty. This coin features large, dramatic artwork, as well as edge-incused inscriptions of the year, "E Pluribus Unum," "In God We Trust" and the mint mark. These Martin Van Buren Presidential $1 Coins are circulating condition coins and can be used in daily transactions. However, because these coins have never been circulated, they also make a great addition to your private collection or a wonderful gift for someone special.
